20th Annual SnowBall – March 2nd!

20th Annual SnowBall – March 2nd!

Eastern Plumas Recreation District (E.P.R.D.) and the Plumas Ski Club are proud to announce the twentieth annual Johnny Redstreake SnowBall, to be held March 2nd at Nakoma Golf Resort in Clio, CA (Eastern Plumas County). Ticket price: $35.

Over the past twenty years, the SnowBall has acquired the distinct honor of being the best party in the Northern Sierra and a sure cure for cabin fever. This year promises to carry on that proud tradition as we come into the home-stretch in the redevelopment effort at Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl. Look for delectable mountain cuisine brought to you by the region’s best chefs and restaurants: Sean Conry of Longboards, Nakoma Golf resort, The Lodge at Whitehawk and Kurt Haselton of Sardine Lake Lodge. The notorious “Johnsville kegs” will be provided by local libationists The Brewing Lair (formerly Under Cover Ale Works) and Eureka Peak Brewing Company (in-house brewer at Chalet View Lodge). Celebrants can support the cause while snatching up some great bargains in live and silent auctions, raffles on a host of necessities for mountain-living and outdoor lifestyles.

All proceeds go to support the re-opening of Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl. Through the hard work of our fundraising team and your generosity, we have accomplished $373,775 worth of capital investments and are only $271,700 away from completion of our Phase 1 redevelopment (encompassing chairlift engineering and installation as well as overall facility and infrastructure improvements). With your help, we can easily achieve this goal.

Once reopened, Johnsville will be an economic, recreational and cultural treasure for Eastern Plumas County. Enhanced winter recreation will keep the lights on in many of our business and vacation homes throughout the year, giving our local economy the boost it so badly needs. The park will provide a positive and healthy recreational resource to our local youths, strengthening our community by encouraging young families to build their lives here. The Longboard events hosted by the Plumas Ski Club celebrate our colorful past and preserve the rugged character and reverence of history that is uniquely Plumas County.

Donations to the Ski Johnsville Fund can be sent to E.P.R.D. at P.O. Box 391, Graeagle, CA 96103. Checks can be made to “Eastern Plumas Recreation Disctrict”, memo “ski johnsville”. All donations will help and we greatly appreciate whatever contribution you can afford to make in these hard times. Please follow our progress at skijohnsville.com and show your support by “Liking” us on Facebook.

US Snowshoe Association to hold 2013 State Championship at JHSB!

US Snowshoe Association to hold 2013 State Championship at JHSB!

The top snowshoe racers in California will traverse over the scenic terrain of the Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl in Plumas-Eureka State Park when the United States Snowshoe Association (USSSA) holds its 2013 state championship races here February 16.

Peter Fain, a western regional director of the USSSA, chose Johnsville for its diverse terrain, rural setting, and as an added attraction for the upcoming Winter Snowfest.

Snowshoe racing begins at 10:00 a.m.

The racecourse is five kilometers in length; 10k racers will run it twice. The race will start and finish near the lodge in the ski bowl, climb one ridge, loop around Eureka Lake and back down the opposite ridge. Fain set the course earlier this month with Plumas residents Dale Lambert and Dan Gallagher.

The USSSA is devoted to promoting outdoor winter safety in conjunction with recreational snowshoeing. The USSSA also serves as the lead governing body for the sport of Snowshoe Racing in the USA.

The snowshoe championships are just one of the many activities and events planned for Winter Snowfest. The Portola Rotary is revving up for their 17th Annual Snowmobile Poker Run at Lake Davis on the 16th, and the Plumas Ski Club will be pulling out the dope for the Historic Longboard Series on the 17th. A snow carnival for kids of all ages, a cross-country ski tour, and a night of fine food and comedy are also planned.

Winter Snowfest is hosted by Graeagle Plumas Alliance and proceeds will go to Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl and Plumas Eureka State Park Association. The Graeagle Plumas Alliance is a non-profit merchants’ marketing group that provides affordable marketing solutions and plans events that encourage tourism and growth for Eastern Plumas County.

The Eastern Plumas Recreation District (EPRD) and the Plumas Ski Club cordially invite you to participate in the success of the 19th annual Johnny Redstreake SnowBall, once again honoring storied Johnsville native and undefeated Longboard champion Johnny Redstreake (1911-1981) on February 25, 2012 at the Nakoma Golf Resort in Gold Mountain just above Portola and Graeagle, California.

SnowBall 2012 is a joint fundraising effort of EPRD and Plumas Ski Club supporting the revival of the new and improved Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl and the historic Longboard events. Nakoma Golf Resort has donated the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed clubhouse for the event, which will feature live entertainment by Cool Black Kettle (a popular contemporary and classic rock band out of South Lake Tahoe) great grub and libations, no-host bar, kegs of beer from local breweries, live and silent auction, raffles and much more.

EPRD is in the process of updating the facilities at Johnsville in anticipation of the Bowl’s grand reopening in 2012. We have a 10-year operating agreement with the State Park, have purchased Squaw Valley’s Main Line chairlift and two surface lifts for tubing and beginner skiing. The support we have received so far has been fantastic, but we need more help. Buy tickets to the SnowBall or donate here.

Once reopened, Johnsville Bowl will be an economic, recreational and cultural treasure for Plumas County. Enhanced winter recreation will keep the lights on many of our businesses and vacation homes throughout the year giving our local economy the boost it so badly needs. The Longboard events celebrate our colorful history and preserve the rugged character and reverence of history that is uniquely Plumas County.

We are asking individuals and businesses to lend a hand once again by offering a generous donation of goods and/or services for auction. Tax-deductible donations will go directly to the effort of updating and reopening the Johnsville Historic Ski bowl with a portion of the proceeds going to Plumas Ski Club to continue the historic Longboard events. Donations can be any valued service such as, haircuts, massages, lodging (at vacation homes, time shares), professional and contractor services. A gift of tangible items are also encouraged such as, meals at a restaurant, gift cards, merchandise and collectibles. In addition to a tax-deduction, business donors will receive marketing exposure a the SnowBall event, here on our skijohnsville.com website and in future publications.

Please also consider purchasing tickets in advance for you, your family and/or staff. Cost per ticket is only $25, which includes all the great grub you can eat from local area restaurants, a live band, the excitement of a live auction and great values on merchandise and services.

Sincerely,

Robert Murray, Board President, EPRD
